Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh

Founded in 1974 by Ellen Berliner and Anne Steytler, Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh (WC&S) was one of the first six shelters in the United States for those experiencing domestic violence. Today, WC&S is so much more than a shelter, supporting resident and non-resident survivors of domestic violence and their children with safety planning, counseling, specialized services, resources, and information so that they can heal and build new lives free from abuse. Our mission is to strengthen our ability to meet the individual and evolving needs of those affected by domestic violence by investing in the growth of our people, deepening community engagement, and amplifying the voices of all survivors. In the 2020-21 fiscal year, WC&S served more than 8,100 adults and children through hotline services, the children's advocacy program, support groups, legal advocacy, individual counseling, education and outreach, emergency shelter, and more.
