Special Olympics Virginia

The Special Olympics mission remains as vital today as it did when the movement was founded in 1968. We provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). This gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Our program, however, is about more than just sports. We envision a world in which people with ID lead vibrant lives grounded in ongoing physical activity, sound nutrition and a deeply held conviction to improve performance on and off the field. No longer is it enough to provide a place for people of all abilities to come together through sport. It is time to demand uncompromising inclusion in all aspects of life.
