The Academy of American Poets was founded in 1934 to support American poets at all stages of their careers and to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry. To fulfill this mission, the Academy produces Poets.org, our award-winning website which provides a wealth of content on contemporary American poetry and receives millions of unique users each month; Poem-a-Day; National Poetry Month (April), the largest literary celebration in the world; Teach This Poem and other K-12 resources for teachers; American Poets Magazine; an annual series of poetry readings and special events; and it awards more funds to poets than any other organization. It also coordinates and supports the work of a national Poetry Coalition, an alliance of more than 20 poetry organizations working to promote the value poets bring to our culture and the important contribution poetry makes in the lives of people of all ages and backgrounds.
